"The Catholic Church"

"THE Catholic Church is an institution I am bound to hold divine — but for unbelievers a proof of its divinity might be found in the fact that no merely human institution conducted with such knavish imbecility would have lasted a fortnight."

~Hilaire Belloc

(Quoted by biographer Robert Speaight, in The Life of Hilaire Belloc.)

  1. That's a great quote, eh? I've mentioned it several times on my blog over the years.

The circumstances that caused Belloc to utter it were very amusing as well.

    What were those circumstances?

    1. He was meeting with a group of fellow writers who were having a grand time mocking the Church in his presence, some good-naturedly, some venemously. He sat patiently for awhile listening to this until he finally rose up in that majestic manner of his and said those words.

I'll bet not a few jaws dropped when he said it.
